Pia Toscano's on in 'Empire State of Mind' - all by myself

With 11 performers this year instead of 10, American Idols Live is taking the opportunity to play a little with the show's format. Instead of starting with the lower-finisher, New York native Pia Toscano gets the first solo number, Alicia Keys' Empire State of Mind.

It's actually a great way to start the show. You can debate Whether or Not Pia was one of the season's most popular contestant, felled by an odd turn of the votes, but she's certainly one of the best vocalists, and Empire State of Mind is a great number for her a bit of a ballad with a beat underneath it. Her second song purely forces bent her image a ballad-singing diva with an R & B, Rihanna's California King Bed.

But she's not alone, as Stefano Langone walks out on stage - turning the duet into a number - to surprised shrieks from the audience. Do not be surprised if this turns out to be a common occurrence throughout the show. From everything I've heard, this show's going to be heavy on the duets, trios and group numbers.

California king bed turns out to be a killer showcase for Pia and Stefano's pipes. When Pia goes for the high notes, the crowd goes nuts.

This is a much stronger start to the show than just having the lowest finishers Essentially function as opening acts.
